20 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Turned 20

Monday, 5 March 2018

I'm pretty sure we all have one or two things that we have learned (and unlearned) from growing up and gaining new life experiences. I gathered bits and pieces of what I've discovered so far throughout my journey--leaving my teen years and taking more responsibility for my life and actions in my twenties.

Protect your energy, guard your space and your own mental health. You'll be surprised by how powerful energies are, and how easily they mix like volatile gases. It can do and undo. It can rip you apart or exult you above the clouds.

Your family life is very important. They are the ones who greeted you the very minute you were brought into this world, and they are the ones you will always fall back to during happy times and setbacks.

The company you keep has more power over your life than you will ever believe.

It's okay to get anxious...to feel nervous. It's also okay to inhale deeply, trust God and exhale, because it's going to be okay.

Find your self-discipline and hold on to it. Without it you'll be unable to live fully. You will be like a lost sheep, like a kite fluttering aimlessly in the sky. Going whatever direction the wind blows it.

Don't waste too much time on meaningless crushes, infatuations or keeping up appearances. When love truly finds you, it will go beyond all mentioned.

Be kind to people.

If you learn how to get your hands out of your hair, maybe it'd grow way thicker.

Make the most out of any position you find yourself. You're not perfect but don't stop till you give it your best. Be the best mother, girlfriend, wife, student, sister, daughter, co-worker, employer...

Your faith will be tried many times, by many circumstances, people and situations. It will wander like it doesn't have a home. Never despair, if you're doing all things right and it will come crawling back to you.

Ask questions. God put other people on earth with you for a reason. They may know something you don't. Whether you like it or not, every now and then somebody has taught you something about yourself. Whether subconsciously or forced down your throat.

Comparison is poison. It will swallow you and spit you out and swallow and spit and swallow and spit. Never allow its venom reach your heart. Always fight it and learn that you're on your own journey.

Coloured creams, powders and gels don't define you. You are who you are at 1am when the lights are out...who you look at in the mirror when you first get up: hair stuck and strands coiled into one another, dark circles and sleepy eyes is your truth. The things you germinate in your heart, mind and soul, your truth.

Eat more fruits and drink more water.

Opportunity is the most ephemeral thing. Don't ask why or how. Simply grab it and give it your best shot.

Do not get yourself so entangled with the colourful picture of success that you forget that you have to fight and fail and work hard and sweat in the process and stagger a few times or a lot of times on the bumpy way to success and fulfilment

Don't ever let anyone make you feel like you don't have a choice. You always have a choice.

Being alone is not the same as being lonely. Seeking completeness in another person is a waste of time. Learn to appreciate alone time, you could learn so much about yourself in the process. It's so good to know that you aren't defined by another individual.

You can never give what you don't have. In the same vein, you can't give love if you don't have it in your heart. Same goes for empathy, compassion and more.
