METAMORPHOSIS

Tuesday, 11 July 2017

I allowed them to break free of the confinement of their respective cocoons.

I could feel the freshly-matured butterflies energetically flutter within my delicate organs—flapping coloured, vibrant-patterned wings at the first sight of his face through the fine mesh of the sheer white veil that Nne Adaugo had skilfully secured into my thick, kinky hair earlier this morning, right after she had applied a subtle bronze powder on my eyelids that sat great against my caramel skin.

I had spent time carefully absorbing each line of his vows, trying to keep myself steady in the dainty silver slippers which were now slightly stained a rusty-red by the thick, damp lateritic soil.
It almost seemed like eternity, as I had been itching to let mine out as well.

The moment I opened my mouth to speak, a tingle of contentment traveled down my spine as the restless winged creatures bolted in motion up my throat as if in a race to see who will get there first. They now coalesce with the sweet words pouring out of my mouth in response to my groom. It tasted like the first drops of mmili ukwa settling at the tip on my tongue on one of the lazy Sunday mornings I spent at Onitsha.

I see them now, flying ever so vivaciously.
The butterflies, the butterflies
They finally set themselves free.
They set themselves free making way through the O-shaped cavity that is my mouth bounded by my full lips coated in deep red gloss,

And as I say, “I do,”
 they join his.
